Not a lot is publicly available about Jefferson County Convict Camp No. 3, but it was here in Trussville in the 1920s and closed in 1935 when the surrounding land was bought by the federal government for the purpose of constructing what we now know as the Cahaba Project.
The prison camp location was in what we now know as Civitan Park, atop hills along the Cahaba River. The remaining foundation of one of the buildings is still behind homes on Parkway Drive along the Cahaba River.
We know there were escapees, a flogging incident that went to court, and roadwork done by the inmates who were kept here. The foundation of a building that remains today was also a blacksmith shop, and the Trussville Historical Museum holds artifacts from that shop.
